Today i would like to talk about realism
Introduction
Welcome to my website on realism in the arts
This website contains descriptions and some interesting examples of the form
"Realistic" distinguishes itself from "realist" art that concerns subject matter. It is the precise, detailed, and accurate representation in art of the appearance of scenes and objects. The most popular artworks that are done in this style are:
- Nighthawks
- The Gross Clinic
- Portrait of an Unknown Woman by Ivan Kramskoi
Inspired by a Greenwich Avenue restaurant, Edward Hopper creates Nighthawks that reflects the hard life and struggle during one of the darkest days in American history - Second World War - and that is why the famous piece has been recognized and appreciated throughout the country and beyond.
Thomas Eakins, creator of the famous "The Gross Clinic", was popular for the idividuality in his artworks. He chooses surgeon Samuel D. Gross to represent one of his surgery sessions. If you will look closely, you can find Thomas himself in the top left corner of the portrait.
Identity of woman shown has not been established by art historians. Kramskoi titled the painting Unknown, and did not mention her in any of his letters or diaries, leading to painting's highly enigmatic reputation. The painting has been used as the cover for some editions of Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina".

wikipedia page about realismAll the atworks listed above were done in realism, representing the meaning that artist put into it. Each person understands the work differently: it can be a call to an action, a reflection of a historical moment or beauty of the nature as it is, but whatever you understood what the creator tried to tell you in his work is up to you. What did you see?
